Each Integrated Urban Solid Waste Treatment and Recovery Centre has a Leachate Treatment Plant (ETAL) for treating leachate from supporting landfills and from the biological anaerobic digestion and composting processes of the MBT Units.

These ETALs treat this water with the aim of reusing it in the biological treatment process of the TMB, allowing for the conservation of an increasingly scarce natural resource. Treated water that cannot be reused in the process is discharged into the municipal sewer system.
